Hyundai has come a long way in 25 years — from budget alternative to category-competitive, with the Elantra, Sonata, Tucson, Santa Fe, and Palisade now matched (or beating) more established competitors on most metrics. The current lineup includes some of the longest factory powertrain warranties in the industry, which is great while you're inside it — and a reason to find a trusted independent shop the day it expires. Frank's Automotive services Hyundai in New Braunfels.
Common Hyundai issues we see
Hyundai issues tend to cluster by engine family:
- Theta II 2.0L and 2.4L engines (used in many 2011-2019 Sonata, Santa Fe, Tucson) have a known oil-consumption and bearing-failure problem. Hyundai issued service campaigns and extended warranties on some years; if you're in that window, document your oil consumption
- GDI carbon buildup on intake valves (most direct-injected engines) — performance loss, rough idle, sometimes misfire codes. Walnut-blasting service required
- Knock sensor and ECM failures — sometimes a covered campaign repair, sometimes not, depending on year
- Theta II rod knock — distinctive deep knocking on cold start that doesn't go away. If you hear this, stop driving the vehicle and have it diagnosed; engine replacement may be covered under campaign
- Catalytic converter failures on older 4-cylinders
- AC condenser leaks common in Sonata / Elantra

Why us vs. the dealership
ASE Certified techs, OEM-equivalent parts, 24-month / 24,000-mile warranty nationwide. We're often the right place once factory warranty runs out — same diagnostic capability, lower labor rate. If a service campaign applies, we'll tell you to take it to the dealer instead — that's what those campaigns are for.
