The transmission is the most expensive routine part of a vehicle to replace and the most preventable to keep alive. Modern automatics — including CVTs and dual-clutch units — depend on clean, full transmission fluid at the right pressure to shift correctly. Frank's Automotive in New Braunfels services and repairs automatic, manual, and CVT transmissions, and the work we recommend most is fluid service on schedule. The repair we'd rather not see — but do plenty of — is what happens when nobody flushed the fluid in 100,000 miles.

What's involved

Transmission work breaks into three tiers:

  • Preventive — fluid service — pull old fluid (drain-and-fill or full flush, depending on what your vehicle calls for), replace transmission filter where one exists, refill to the correct level with the exact fluid type your transmission requires (these are not interchangeable — Dexron, ATF+4, CVT fluid, DCT fluid, Mercon, Type T-IV all have different friction profiles)
  • Repair — diagnostic + targeted — solenoid replacement, valve-body service, external leaks (pan gasket, axle seals), TCM reprogram, sensor replacement. Many shudders, harsh shifts, and "won't go into gear" symptoms are repairable without rebuilding the unit
  • Replacement — rebuild or remanufactured — when the bands, clutches, or pump are gone, the unit comes out. We can source a quality remanufactured transmission with its own warranty, or rebuild the original

Every transmission job starts with a road test, a fluid inspection, and a scan-tool check of the transmission control module.

When to bring it in

Bring it in for any of:

  • Slipping — engine RPM rises but the vehicle doesn't accelerate proportionally
  • Harsh or delayed shifts — clunks between gears, or a long pause before engagement when shifting into drive or reverse
  • Shuddering under light throttle, usually around 35–50 mph
  • Fluid leak — red, pink, or brown spots under the vehicle (transmission fluid is usually red when new; brown means it's overdue)
  • Burnt smell from the dipstick — overheated fluid
  • Check-engine light or transmission warning light
  • Manual transmission issues — grinding into gear, clutch slipping under load, won't disengage

Texas heat is hard on transmission fluid. The fluid that's rated for 60,000 miles in Minnesota is closer to 40,000 miles in summer-commute Texas. Don't drive a transmission that's slipping or overheating — every additional mile costs you future repair dollars.
