Common BMW issues we see
BMW patterns by platform:
- Valve cover gasket leaks — extremely common, every N52/N55/B58 era engine. Oil runs down to the exhaust manifold, smokes, and creates the smell BMW owners know too well
- Oil filter housing gasket leaks — N20, N52, N55 — the second-most-common oil leak after valve cover. Different gasket, similar symptoms (oil on the exhaust)
- Electric water pump (N20, N52, N55) — fails around 80,000-120,000 miles. Overheating, sometimes triggers a warning before complete failure
- VANOS solenoid issues — code P0014/P0015, rough idle, sometimes the rough running
- High-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) — known issue especially on early N54 turbo engines; covered under extended warranty for a while
- Carbon buildup on intake valves — every direct-injected BMW eventually needs walnut blasting
- Plastic cooling system parts — radiator, expansion tank, thermostat housing all develop cracks over time
