The water pump is the heart of your engine's cooling system. It circulates coolant from the radiator, through the engine block and cylinder head, through the heater core, and back to the radiator — keeping engine temperature in a narrow operating range. When the water pump fails, coolant stops moving, the engine overheats within minutes, and (if you don't shut it off in time) the head gasket fails or the head warps. Frank's Automotive in New Braunfels does water-pump diagnosis and replacement, and we'll be straight with you about whether to bundle the work with related components while we have access.

What's involved

A water pump replacement typically includes:

  • Diagnosis — pressure-test the cooling system to find leaks, inspect the pump weep hole for coolant residue, check for bearing noise, scan for cooling-system codes
  • Coolant drain — pull the existing coolant for safe disposal
  • Belt and tensioner removal — most external pumps are driven off the serpentine belt; internal pumps require timing-cover removal
  • Pump replacement — OEM or OEM-equivalent unit with new gasket or O-ring
  • Coolant refill — using the exact coolant type your manufacturer specifies (Dexcool, HOAT, OAT, IAT, etc. — they don't mix)
  • Bleeding — modern cooling systems need careful air bleeding from designated bleeder ports to avoid pockets that cause overheating
  • Pressure test after refill — confirm no leaks at operating temperature

When the water pump is driven by the timing belt, we strongly recommend doing the timing belt at the same time. The labor is identical; the parts cost is the difference. Doing one without the other means paying for the same teardown twice within a couple of years.

When to bring it in

Symptoms of a failing water pump:

  • Coolant leak at the front of the engine — sometimes a puddle, sometimes just residue on the front of the block
  • Whining or rumbling that rises with engine RPM (failing bearing)
  • Wobbling pulley — visible movement at the pump pulley with the engine running
  • Overheating in normal driving (temp gauge climbing, especially in stop-and-go traffic)
  • Steam or sweet smell from under the hood
  • Coolant level dropping with no visible external leak

Don't drive an overheating engine. Once the temp gauge is in the red, you have minutes before damage starts — pull over, shut it down, and call us.

Why Frank's for water pump replacement

Our techs are ASE Certified, we use OEM-equivalent water pumps matched to your vehicle, and we use the correct coolant type for your manufacturer — not "universal" coolant that ruins seals. We bleed the cooling system properly so you don't get an air-pocket overheat a week later. The work is covered by our 24-month / 24,000-mile warranty.

Bundle it with the timing belt to save labor — we'll quote both before doing the work and you decide. Request an appointment or call (830) 627-3939.
