The timing belt synchronizes the rotation of the crankshaft and camshaft so the engine's valves open and close at exactly the right moment relative to the pistons. If the belt breaks or jumps a tooth on an interference engine (the majority of modern engines), the pistons hit the valves — and your $400 timing-belt service turns into a $4,000+ engine repair. Most manufacturers specify replacement between 60,000 and 105,000 miles, or every 7-10 years. Frank's Automotive in New Braunfels does timing-belt replacement to OEM specification — and we'll tell you whether your engine is interference or non-interference so you know the stakes.

What's involved

A proper timing-belt service:

  • Verify the schedule for your year/make/model
  • Engine timing check before disassembly to confirm the belt hasn't already jumped a tooth
  • Front-cover removal — engine mount, valve cover, and timing covers as required
  • Timing belt, tensioner, idler pulleys replaced as a kit — the tensioner spring weakens with the belt
  • Water pump replaced at the same time if driven by the timing belt (same labor; $50-$100 in extra parts)
  • Crankshaft and camshaft seals replaced if questionable
  • Reassembly to factory torque specs with new gaskets, plus engine run-up and recheck

We document everything in the service record so the next interval is clear.

When to bring it in

Replace on schedule, not on symptoms. A timing belt about to break doesn't warn you. That said:

  • You're approaching the replacement interval — call with year/make/model and we'll tell you what it is
  • You're past the interval and never had it done — get it done immediately
  • You just bought a used vehicle and can't prove the belt was changed — assume it wasn't
  • You hear a slapping or whining from the timing cover area
  • The engine is hard to start or runs roughly after sitting — could be a belt that jumped a tooth

If your vehicle has a timing chain instead of a belt, those generally last the engine's life but can wear at high mileage. We'll tell you which you have.

Why Frank's for timing belt replacement

Our service techs are ASE Certified, we use OEM-equivalent timing components (belt, tensioner, idler, water pump) from quality manufacturers, and we use the correct coolant type when the water pump comes out with the belt. The job is covered by our 24-month / 24,000-mile warranty.

If you're near the schedule, don't wait — most timing-belt jobs are one full day in the shop. Request an appointment or call (830) 627-3939 and we'll tell you what your vehicle's interval is.
