Your vehicle has at least four different filters — oil, engine air, cabin air, and fuel — and each has a separate replacement schedule. They're cheap individually, easy to overlook, and miserable to ignore. A clogged engine air filter chokes performance and fuel economy. A clogged cabin filter restricts A/C airflow. An old oil filter lets contaminants circulate. Frank's Automotive in New Braunfels checks all of them at every oil change, so you don't have to track four separate intervals on your own.
What's involved
The four filters most vehicles need replaced on schedule:
- Oil filter — replaced at every oil change. We use OEM-equivalent filters from major manufacturers sized to your engine. Skipping this on a "drain only" service is how unfiltered debris ends up circulating through the bearings
- Engine air filter — typically every 15,000–30,000 miles or once a year. Texas dust and pollen shorten this. Check is visual: hold it up to a light — if you can't see light through it, it's overdue. Affects fuel economy and acceleration
- Cabin air filter — typically every 15,000–30,000 miles. This is the one people forget. It filters the air going into your A/C system, which means a clogged one restricts airflow, lets pollen and mold spores into the cabin, and can ice up the evaporator. Texas allergens (cedar fever, oak pollen) make this even more important
- Fuel filter — depends on the vehicle. Some have an inline filter requiring replacement every 30,000-50,000 miles. Many modern vehicles have a "lifetime" filter inside the fuel tank module — replaced only if it fails
We can also replace PCV filters, transmission filters (with fluid service), and differential breathers on vehicles that need them.
When to bring it in
Common signs of a clogged or overdue filter:
- Reduced fuel economy — engine air filter or fuel filter
- Sluggish acceleration — engine air filter
- Weak A/C airflow — cabin air filter
- Pollen smell or musty cabin — cabin air filter
- Long crank or stumbling under acceleration — fuel filter (older vehicles)
- Dark, gritty oil on the dipstick — oil filter wasn't changed at last service, or interval is way overdue
- Check engine light with codes related to mass airflow or fuel trim — sometimes a clogged air filter
If you can't remember when filters were last replaced, they're overdue.
Why Frank's for filter replacement
Our service techs are ASE Certified and we use OEM-equivalent filters matched to your vehicle — not the cheapest paper-bound option that bypasses contaminants under high airflow. The work is covered by our 24-month / 24,000-mile warranty, though it's mostly a formality for filter replacement.
We catch them at every oil change — most filter replacements are bundled with routine service, which saves you a separate trip. Request an appointment or call (830) 627-3939 if you'd like a filter inspection.
