Your vehicle's battery powers everything from the starter to the dome light, and on modern vehicles it also keeps dozens of computer modules holding their settings while the car is off. When the battery starts to fail, it doesn't politely give you warning — usually you turn the key one cold morning and nothing happens. Frank's Automotive in New Braunfels does free battery testing on every visit so you don't get caught in a parking lot at 6 PM with a no-start.

What's involved

A proper battery service includes:

  • Load test — apply a calibrated load (typically half the cold-cranking-amps rating) and measure how the voltage holds. A failing battery drops voltage under load even when it shows a healthy resting reading
  • Resting voltage check — should be 12.6 V or higher on a fully charged battery
  • Alternator output test — to confirm the battery isn't being undercharged by a failing alternator (otherwise the new battery will fail too)
  • Cable and terminal inspection — corrosion at the terminals is a common cause of no-start; we clean the posts and clamps with a wire brush
  • Replacement — battery sized to your vehicle's group spec, with the correct cold-cranking-amps rating
  • Computer relearn if needed — many vehicles need a steering-angle calibration, idle relearn, or window-position reset after a battery disconnect

The new battery goes in, we apply protective grease to the terminals, and we test the charging system once more before you leave.

When to bring it in

Replace the battery when you notice:

  • Slow crank when starting — the engine turns over noticeably slower than normal
  • Dim headlights at idle, brightening as the engine revs (often alternator-related, but battery contributes)
  • Dashboard "battery" warning light
  • Repeated jump-starts — once you've needed two jumps, the battery is done
  • Swollen battery case — heat-related failure, common in Texas summers
  • Age — most batteries in Texas last 3–5 years. Northern climates get 5–7. If yours is past 4, get it tested

Texas summer heat is the single biggest factor in battery life. The heat under a New Braunfels hood in August is brutal on the lead plates and electrolyte. If you've been parking in the sun all summer and the car is cranking slower than it used to, get it tested before fall.

Why Frank's for battery replacement

Our service techs are ASE Certified, we carry batteries sized for every make and model, and we test the charging system before recommending a replacement so you're not replacing a battery that's being killed by a failing alternator. The work is covered by our 24-month / 24,000-mile warranty, and the battery itself carries the manufacturer's pro-rated warranty separately.

Call us with the symptoms — slow crank, repeated jumps, age past four years — and we'll test it free of charge. Request an appointment or call (830) 627-3939.
