Headlight restoration brings yellowed, hazy, oxidized plastic headlight lenses back to like-new clarity at a small fraction of the cost of replacement. Modern headlight assemblies cost $400-$1,500 per side once you factor in HID or LED projector units, and on most vehicles a careful restoration delivers a result that's nearly indistinguishable from new. Beyond the cosmetic improvement, restored headlights significantly increase light output — and night-driving safety — by removing the haze that scatters and dims the beam. Frank's Automotive in New Braunfels does headlight restoration with a UV-protective sealant so the clarity lasts.

What's involved

A proper headlight restoration:

  • Masking — protect the surrounding paint, trim, and rubber seals around the headlight from the abrasives used during sanding
  • Cleaning — degrease the lens surface to remove road grime and contaminants
  • Wet sanding through progressive grits — typically 800, 1500, 2500, sometimes 3000 — to remove the oxidized outer layer of the polycarbonate plastic and gradually refine the surface
  • Polishing — buffing compound on a foam pad to restore the clear, optical-grade finish
  • UV sealant application — this is the step shortcut shops skip. Without a UV-protective coat, the freshly sanded plastic will re-oxidize within months. A proper sealant lasts 2-5 years
  • Final inspection — beam-pattern check at night where possible, to confirm light output is improved

Most jobs take 30-60 minutes per pair.

When to bring it in

Restoration is worth considering when:

  • Lenses look yellow, hazy, or cloudy — UV exposure breaks down the outer plastic layer over time
  • Night driving feels dimmer than it used to — restored lenses can recover 50-80% of original light output
  • Vehicle is going on the market — clean headlights significantly improve perceived condition
  • Lenses have superficial scratches but no cracks
  • You're considering a $400-$1,500 headlight replacement — try restoration first

Replace (don't restore) when:

  • The lens has a crack — even a hairline crack means moisture will get in
  • The reflector inside has tarnished or peeled — the issue is internal, not external
  • The plastic has deep gouges that won't sand out without going through the lens
